You will also learn how to use PI Processbook to access your process data through a variety of screens, like trends and bar graphs to monitor your process. And finally, the PI Datalink tool to create fully dynamic Excel reports in real time

Asset Hierarchies and Analytics with PI AF Training

With the PI Analytics exclusive course, you will learn how to create different assets analysis types in order to obtain more data information. Using PI Asset Framework (AF), you are going to explore a variety of analysis that includes calculus expressions of multiple lines, aggregated attribute summaries, event frames to capture important events in the process, and notifications to activate alerts on critical machines. Additionally, the calculation tools such as formula or values recovery mode and performance equations.

PI System™ Administration Training

The purpose of this class is to provide a working knowledge of the tasks required to maintain PI System and support the technical needs of its users. It covers utilities provided with the PI System as well as tag and system configuration. This class covers common management tasks, data flow in PI System, and basic troubleshooting procedures.

Contents of the course PI System­™ Administration

The class will begin with the PI System basics where the question “What is the PI System?” will be asked and answered. Next students will explore how data flows in the PI System and discover how data flows from data source to end user. They will also learn how to connect to a PI System. A good deal of time and attention are paid to Asset Framework and Data Archive security and monitoring your PI System.

Note: The instructor can adjust the class content to fit the students’ requirements. This means they’ll spend more time on subjects that are important to them and less time on subjects that are less relevant to their situation. However, the trainer will not go beyond the scope of this training package.

PI System™ Visualization Tools Training

In our Visualizing PI System Data class we teach our students how to use the PI Visualization Tools. The course covers PI ProcessBook™, PI Vision™, and PI DataLink™. Using PI ProcessBook, students will create dynamic, interactive, graphical displays featuring real-time PI System™ data. Our web-based tool, PI Vision, will be used to quickly create and share displays, as well as view PI ProcessBook displays from anywhere and on any device. PI DataLink is a Microsoft® Excel® add-in that allows users to import PI System data into a spreadsheet in order to create easy-to-read, reusable, reports. Much of the class time is dedicated to hands-on activities.

Contents of the course PI System­™ Visualization Tools

In this course participants will learn how to build displays in PI Processbook that allow them to simulate control screens and gain visibility into their process. This class will cover basic dynamic symbols and how to connect them to real-time data. The use of static symbols that help provide more context for deployments will also be covered. The process of organizing deployments in workbooks will also be reviewed. PI Datalink is a Microsoft Excel plug-in that allows users to import Pi System data into a spreadsheet in order to build reports and perform a wide range of analysis. Participants will learn how to consult unique values, value ranges, and how to apply simple filters to their consults.

The course will also cover how to apply custom calculations and format the data to create visually appealing reports. Using PI Vision, participants will learn to perform ad-hoc analysis and problem solving by building web deployments. PI Processbook deployments will be published in PI VISION to demonstrate how PI Processbook reports can be viewed from anywhere on a variety of mobile devices.

Asset Hierarchies and Analytics with PI AF Training

In this course, you will learn the skills needed to successfully model your process and equipment using the PI Asset Framework (AF) Server. This course discusses the methodologies needed to build representations of assets (AF Elements) and their associated data (AF Attributes). This course also includes real-time calculations (Asset Analytics), Automatic creation of Events (Event Frames) and E-mail notifications configuration (PI Notifications).

Contents of the course Asset Hierarchies and Analytics PI

This course provides a practical understanding of the capabilities of the AF server, an integral part of the PI System. The participant will learn to define coherent representations of the organization's assets and / or equipment and will use these representations in simple or complex analyzes that produce critical and actionable information. AF allows the application designer to identify and customize the components or elements that make up a process, associate real-time, relational or calculated data with these elements, specify the organizational structure through hierarchies or connectivity relationships, and apply calculations or rules to these assets and determine how the results should be displayed. In this class, we discuss and build basic AF elements and attributes, build calculations, and configure relational database consults. In a simulated environment, Asset Analytics is used to calculate metric data for Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

We see how Event Frames are used to monitor the production process in downtime situations and for process excursions. We explore information visualization with different products in PI Visualization Suite. In the advanced exercises we discuss combining the various elements to provide users with complex information structures. We will build connections to relational databases and use that information in screens and analysis.
Note: Notifications will also be covered in detail, allowing users to configure custom alarms through a standard user interface based on any data source. By leveraging generic data access and template-driven capabilities, AF users can redeploy alarm parameters in Notifications to Similar Assets across the enterprise. When operational excursions occur, notifications can send alerts to a single recipient, a group of contacts, or an escalation team that reflects the organization's chain of command.

Training Service Deliverables

Part I

Pre-service checklist review. An interactive on-site PI System Administration for IT Professionals class. Provisioning of a preconfigured virtual learning environment hosted in the Microsoft® Azure cloud for student use during the class (see access requirements in the Requirements section below).

Part II

Preparation of Course documentation for a maximum of 12 students per class: Training material will be current to the latest version of the PI System tools. If you wish to have the class taught using an older version of our software, this must be specified at the time of ordering so we can prepare the appropriate course documentation. Training certificates for each student.

Equipped Classroom

The client is responsible for providing a fully equipped classroom. The minimum requirements for a classroom are: One PC per person, with the minimum technical specifications of a Pentium® Dual Core Processor , 2 GB of RAM, 1 GB of free hard disk space, network TCP / IP, and Windows® 7 or Windows 8. A whiteboard or white screen and a compatible portable projector. If you use Azure, students must be able to connect to virtual machines through remote desktop connection (the necessary firewall ports must be open).


The students should be comprised of individuals with the following skill set: Experience navigating a Microsoft Windows operating system. Some experience working with Microsoft Excel. Basic knowledge of the PI System is recommended but not required.


PIPER Solutions requires a minimum of 2 weeks notice to prepare course documentation, prepare Azure virtual machines, and assign an instructor. OSIsoft will send or deliver training materials on or before the first day of the course. We suggest having the class from Tuesday to Friday. This will allow the instructor to travel Monday morning and perform any required setup and testing in advance of the scheduled training days.
