PI System Upgrade to High Availability


The main objective is to upgrade an existing PI System™ installation to support HA for the Data Archive. The installation is performed on-site by a qualified engineer accredited by OSISoft® as a PI System Infrastructure and Installation Specialist.


The scope of this package is limited to one HA PI Collective and 3 standard PI Interfaces or PI Connectors in failover configuration.


  • Pre-installation checklist review; confirmation that all prerequisites are met before proceeding.
  • Pre-visit High Availability (HA) architecture validation. During the validation process, the HA architecture is reviewed and validated and potential problems are identified. The previsit
  • HA architecture validation should be performed at least 1 week prior to the on-site
  • Verification that Data Archive hardware and operating system is adequate for the new version of the software.
  • Verification that a proper Data Archive Backup has been done prior to the upgrade.
  • Upgrade the Data Archive to the latest released version (including any patches) and install Data Archive installation on one secondary node.
  • Configuration of the Data Archive collective and transfer of the configuration of the primary server to the secondary server including the three latest archives.
  • Test one PI Client connection and one client reconnection to primary and secondary Data Archives.
  • Test Data Archive failover.
  • Inspection and modification of PI Timeout Table to comply with OSIsoft best practices.
  • PI System daily backup configuration on both Data Archive servers.
  • Review of site backup and recovery procedure.
  • Enable PI Interface for Performance Monitor and PI Interface for Ping to monitor the performance of the Data Archive (up to 50 tags and two PI ProcessBook™ displays).
  • Acquisition node upgrade to latest PI Communication libraries, buffering, and PI Interfaces or PI Connectors (up to 3 PI Interfaces or PI Connectors).
  • Verification and test of PI Buffering on acquisition nodes.
  • Verification of PI Interface™ and PI Connector configuration and log files on acquisition
  • OSIsoft technical support overview.
  • PI System Introduction (time permitting).
  • Installation report.
  • Inspection of PI Interface and PI Connector IO Rates and data flow.
  • Installation of the latest version of the System Management Tools (SMT) on both servers and on a management station.

The implementation dates will be mutually agreed after the formal acceptance of the service. The implementation process, from the request until its completion, normally takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Week 1 and 2 - Communication of prerequisites and ordering of OSISoft® software, PI Server and PI Interface/PI Connector node hardware and operating systems, and control system-specific hardware and software. Confirmation of installation dates with OSIsoft. Confirmation of installation date with PIPER.

Week 3 - On-site or remote upgrade by PIPER (Up to 5 days).


  • Data Archive (Primary and Secondary) and acquisition node hardware and operating system must be operational before OSIsoft’s arrival. For information regarding hardware requirements please refer to the following page: A PIPER representative will confirm that the hardware requirements have been met during the preparation phase.
  • TCP/IP communication must be enabled and operational among all PI System computers and the required firewall ports must be open. The Data Archive communicates on port 5450. AF communicates on ports 5457 and 5459. PI Analysis Service Communicates on port 5463. Notifications communicates on port 5468. A PIPER representative will confirm the correct ports with the customer during the preparation phase.
  • Most PI Interfaces and PI Connectors require third-party hardware and software that must be installed and operational before OSIsoft arrival. Specific requirements will be validated during the pre-installation checklist review.
  • Customer’s technical staff must be available to provide system support (security, network, and control systems).
  • Customer must have a valid account on the OSIsoft technical support website with permissions to download all required software. This account will also be required in order to generate a license file for the Data Archive.
  • Customer must provide a configuration station with Microsoft® Excel® software.


  • Modification of custom applications or third-party products including VBA code in PI ProcessBook or PI DataLink is not included in this package.
  • This package does not include configuration of Asset Framework High Availability.
