PI System Upgrade

Objetives

The main objective is to upgrade an existing PI System™ to the latest released version. The installation is performed on-site by a qualified engineer accredited by OSISoft® as a PI System Infrastructure and Installation Specialist.

Scope

The scope of this package is limited to a single Data Archive and up to three standard PI Interfaces or PI Connectors.

Deliverables

  • Pre-installation checklist review; confirmation that all prerequisites are met before proceeding.
  • Verification that hardware and operating system meet the requirements.
  • Verification that a proper PI Backup has been performed prior to the upgrade.
  • Data Archive upgrade from 3.x to latest released version (including any patches).
  • Asset Framework (AF) Server, Asset Analytics, and PI System Explorer install/upgrade to the latest released version.
  • Notifications install/upgrade to the latest released version.
  • Optional: Migration of up to 100 legacy Notifications (version 1.x) or Notification templates to Notification rules (version 2.x) during an upgrade of Notifications. An additional day may be required.
  • Verification and creation of additional archive files, if necessary.
  • Test one client connection (PI SDK™ and PI API™).
  • Inspection and modification of Data Archive tuning parameters to comply with OSIsoft technical support best practices.
  • PI System daily backup configuration.
  • Review of site backup and recovery procedure.
  • Install PI Interfaces for System Monitoring – ½ day of additional time may be required.
  • Acquisition node upgrade to latest PI Communication libraries and the latest PI Interface or PI Connector versions (up to 3 PI Interfaces or PI Connectors).
  • Verification and test of PI Buffer Subsystem on acquisition nodes.
  • Inspection of interfaces IO rates and data flow.
  • Installation of the latest version of the System Management Tools (SMT) on the Data Archive server and on one management station.
  • Presentation of new features of upgraded software.
  • OSIsoft technical support overview.
  • PI System Introduction (time permitting).
  • Installation report.

Timeline

The upgrade process, from ordering to completion, normally takes 3 to 4 weeks:

Week 1 - Communication of prerequisites. Confirmation of installation date with PIPER.

Week 2 - Download latest version of software to be upgraded from OSIsoft technical support website.

Weeks 3 and 4 - On-site or remote upgrade by OSIsoft (4-6 days).

Requirements

  • Data Archive and acquisition node hardware and operating system must be operational before OSIsoft’s arrival.
  • TCP/IP communication must be enabled and operational among all PI System computers and the required firewall ports must be open. The Data Archive communicates on port 5450. AF communicates on ports 5457 and 5459. PI Analysis Service Communicates on port 5463. PI Notifications communicates on port 5468.
  • Customer’s technical staff must be available to provide system support (security, network, and control systems) for the duration of the upgrade.
  • Customer must acquire required OSIsoft software media prior to PIPER’s arrival.
  • Customer must provide a configuration station with SMT and Microsoft® Excel® software.
  • SQL Server Installation:
      • Option 1
      • Existing SQL Server will be used, if so, SQL DBA must be available to assist with SQL Server configuration and security. OR

      • Option 2
      • SQL Server will be installed, configured, and operational prior to OSIsoft arrival, if so SQL DBA must be available to assist with SQL Server configuration and security. OR

      • Option 3
      • SQL Express will be installed by OSIsoft Field Service – ½ day of additional time may be required.

    • Customer must guarantee the validity of the security permits required for access to their organization as a prerequisite to the visit.

Limitations

  • Modification of custom applications or third-party products including VBA code in PI ProcessBook or PI DataLink is not included in this package.
  • This package does not include configuration of Asset Framework High Availability.
